Sculpt Gardens is a local San Francisco Bay Area landscape design + build company that creates custom, low-maintenance, practical gardens. We work with you to create not just the garden of your dreams, but an additional outdoor living space. We bring decades of experience and unlike many landscaping companies, we design and we build.

We design outdoor spaces that complement your home, personal style, and way of life. It is our mission to design gardens that draw people outside, whether to enjoy nature, relax, cook, play, or entertain. We do it all and we do it ourselves, with you in mind. We do design work, stone masonry, carpentry, water and fire features, excavation, concrete, drainage, irrigation, faux turf, lighting, playgrounds, and much more.

Our extraordinary gardens increase your usable space and are a talking point of every home we develop. In addition to enhancing the enjoyment of your home, they are highlighted in home sale listings and always prove to increase home value far beyond the cost of the project.

We are experts in identifying and optimizing your layout, carefully considering sun or shade preferences, wind or weather protection needs, privacy, terracing, and retaining wall potential.

From the use of locally available natural materials to the creation of low-maintenance and drought-tolerant gardens, Sculpt Gardens strives to integrate sustainable, green practices into its process.

We maintain most of the gardens we build and create a custom schedule to ensure each garden is kept up to the highest standard.

Sculpt Gardens has built its reputation on great communication, quality work, trust, and dependability. With uncompromising attention to detail, owner John Steuernagel is present throughout the project to ensure it runs on time and to exact specifications and standards. This personal attention from the designer is what sets Sculpt Gardens apart from other companies.

Contact us for a consultation. We will assess your garden needs, desires, and budget. We will then come to your home, get to know you, your style, and your outdoor space.

Sculpt will prepare and present a custom design and estimate. We develop your design and present hand-drawn layouts, 3D renderings, inspirational photos, and material samples to give you the best possible vision of what is to come.

Sit back and watch us transform your space and blow your mind! John will be onsite minding each and every detail, no subs, and no fuss.

We will maintain it. We manage the projects we build and will establish your custom maintenance schedule.

Founder and Designer John Steuernagel is a third generation ornamental horticulturist with over 30 years of experience. He has scrupulously studied landscape design, spent hours visualizing at the drawing table, and been a trusted manager and mentor to crews working in the field. John is an artist, a nature lover, a craftsman, stonemason and hardscape specialist, a mechanic, a carpenter, an environmentalist, and a small business devotee. Sculpt Gardens is a small company that does big work. It is important to John to be on-site personally to refine each element from conception to completion. He is present every day, setting the standard, observing, thinking, and perfecting each and every detail. John takes great pride in the specifics of his hand-drawn, simple and graceful garden designs. He is environmentally conscious and resourceful – a master in his field who puts his heart and soul into each project.

Founder & Designer

Danielle founded Sculpt Gardens with her husband John because she and John shared a passion for creating beautiful gardens and believed in the skill and artistry of their collaborations. After their daughter Suzette was born, Danielle left her successful career in event planning to become an integral part of the management, creative process, and client relations for the company. Her years of experience designing and producing corporate events, marketing brands, and managing clients, all add expertise to her role at Sculpt. She enjoys working closely with Sculpt clients and John to hone in on the style and lifestyle needs for each outdoor space. She is organized, collaborative, creative, detail oriented and very proud of their family-run business.

Born in England, Tim moved to America in 1982, landing in Florida, where he first started landscaping. He escaped from Florida, arriving in San Francisco in 1992 to work for a large landscape construction company, where he met John Steuernagel. After 16 years, Tim left to work as an irrigation and lighting specialist. He returned to landscaping to join the Sculpt team. Tim is a conscientious, crafty, positive leader, with a wry sense of humor. Tim enjoys time with his partner Cat and their son Francis. Other passions include motorcycles and building found-object sculptures, and football (that's soccer to us Yanks.)

James hails from a small farming village in France and moved to the Bay Area at age 17. He has been landscaping and gardening ever since. Besides a stint in Canada doing framing and construction, James has focused on working with local landscapers and developing his own client base. He is a highly motivated individual who enjoys working with plants and whose happy demeanor on the job is contagious. When not hard at work with Sculpt, James can be found foraging for wild mushrooms and riding his dual sport motorcycle everywhere.
